The Art and Business of Writing

One thing I learned early on in my journey to publication is that a writer has to wear two hats, that one that says “author” across the front of it and the one that says “industry-savvy business mogul” (okay, maybe not mogul).

Writing a good or even great story is just not enough. If you want to make it and get published and write successfully you have to know the industry, the trends, the ins and outs, the who’s who.

Research is the key here. Know your audience (yes, target audience), know what’s hot and what is so not, know what publishers are publishing what and changes that are being made (if you haven’t noticed in the past couple years, things are always changing).

Yes, writing is art, man, fluid, but there’s also that stiff business side (like PCs and Macs, right?) and if you want to succeed you need to be friends with both.

Literary agent, Rachelle Gardner has more to say on this issue here. Good stuff.
