Spiritual Battles and Writing

This morning I’m thinking about something that’s got my mind in a knot. I’d like your opinion.

If you read this blog regularly or follow me on Facebook or have read one or both of my books you know I write supernatural suspense. That means suspense that deals with the spiritual realm. And if you’ve read my books you know I always portray good over evil and that my stories have a significant and positive spiritual message to them. My question is: In dealing with the subject matter I do, am I tinkering with something I ought not be tinkering with?

The reason I ask: I emailed a friend (a missionary) an update on our family. He knows about my cancer and Caroline’s arthritis. He wrote back that in mentioning our trials to a friend she suggested maybe we were “willingly placing [ourselves] into a sphere for increased spiritual warfare challenges” because of the subject matter of my books. Now, my friend bookended that with “but greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

Obviously, that got me thinking. I’m not one to give a lot of credit to Satan or his minions, and I always thought our trials were simply part of living in a fallen world, but . . .

I know my books are impacting people for good. I’ve got a ton of emails from readers thanking me for the message in my books and telling me how that message has positively impacted them. But, well, it got me thinking.

I know this is heavy stuff, but any thoughts?

Don't dwell on it. No matter what actions we do or what path we take, the grass will always be greener on the other guy's lawn. Just follow His Word and you'll be cared for.

  2. Satan will fight us no matter what we do. I personally wouldn't think what you write would bring on Satan attacking any more than he already would, but that is my personal opinion, though it may be true that he fights Christians harder who are in the limelight doing anything to help & encourage other Christians – pastors, missionaries – writers could certainly fall into that category – but your subject matter? Doubt it matters to him, he hates you for being a Christian and using your talent for God.Frank Peretti might be a good one to ask on this. 😦

  3. Our focus must always stay on the "He who is in you" part of the equation. One reason I like your writing is because you never make evil look anywhere on par with God. Is Satan real and dangerous? Sure. Is he all he cracks himself to be? Not if you are a believer in the one true God.

  4. "Is any one of you in trouble? […] Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective." James 5:13-16 I do not believe that Arthritis and Cancer are demon- or sin-caused. If you hate demons and are portraying them negatively and as deceivers (as they should be) then you are doing nothing more than displaying the truth. The idea that that invites them to demonize you, I believe, is more superstition; although it could very well be possible. I haven't gotten a chance to check your books yet (so I don't know how you portray them)…I will very soon. At any rate, I'm already fan of your blog :)I'll pray for you.

  5. I think you should just keep praying about it and remembering that God is in charge no matter what. Pray about your daughter's illness (and your own). I think our society ends up putting too much faith in doctors and not enough in God as the true healer. This would be especially true for illnesses like psoriatic arthritis, a disease I'm very familiar with. Doctors can't cure it, so you absolutely can't put your trust in them. I've been studying autoimmune disorders for years, and my suggestion (aside from prayer) is to get your daughter's vit D levels tested. And I won't annoy you with any other advice. Most people hate advice.

  6. I think Satan goes after believers who are on the front-lines, "willing and working for God's good pleasure." Your books have a message that explicitly state that God is good and more powerful than Satan, and that there is a way to get right with God. Why wouldn't the enemy try to stop you?The Apostle Peter said, "My friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you suffering as though something strange were happening to you." (Ist Peter 4:12)You must carry Christ with you and by doing so, catch the enemy's notice.I've noticed the same attacks (depression, sudden anxieties, health complaints, difficulties) and they always correspond to beginning something new and "risky" in my teaching ministry. As long as you are not glorifying evil or giving readers an excuse to delve into or explore some aspect of the occult, then bathe your writing in prayer.

  7. The older I get the more people I find that want to suggest an illness is due to secret sin. I guess they can't explain or cure it so by default it must be something the person is doing to bring these things on. People can be so hurtful with these kinds of suggestions.Every day when we get out of bed, we place ourselves willingly in a sphere for increased spiritual warfare challenges. God has called, you, the Warrior, have answered. Period.

  8. Mike,You must be obedient to God's direction in your life. If that means writing suspense/horror…whatever you want to call it, then write it!! Your books carry a great message and reach folks that others' stories will never reach!Illness of any kind has nothing to do with what you write! It may be God is testing your faith, strengthening your family, but that may not ever be revealed to you in full. As long as your focus is on Christ and you are obeying His direction in your life, then press on, dear brother!Satan will attack. He is good at that. But he can't do ANYTHING without first passing it through our FATHER'S hands! So you just write and testify and blog and reach others for Christ! That's what this ephemeral existence is all about!!MANY MANY blessings Brother!! Write on!!

  9. Julie Arduini.com: The Surrendered Scribe

I have a mentor who feels the Christian community tends to throw out the baby w/the bathwater. Satan counterfeits everything God started and tries to make it his own. For all the gore, new age, and witchcraft in books readers are diving into—why can't Christians present books that Glorify Him? I feel that's where you write from, and what He called you to do.In the same breath though…I ask all writers whether they are just taking that first step or are published pros, if they have a prayer team covering them. If not, I really encourage you to consider this. I invite prayer warriors each year to cover me and my writing ministry in prayer. I e mail them once a month with praises and prayers, asking they pray as led and keep my correspondence private as I tend to share deeper things with them. This year I felt God asking me to call in reinforcements and these warriors came into cover me in marriage, family health, and balance as a wife, mom and writer. I encourage same s*x prayer warriors, so if it's hard for you to find men in this capacity, perhaps this is something you and your wife could do together, with her communicating with the team. You're way ahead of me in the writing game but I believe He equips the called willing to serve Him. I'm convinced prayer is vital in all I do.I hope this gives you clarity, even if you disagree, that you find peace in all things you are a part of.Blessings to you and your family.*new site/moved blog:http://www.juliearduini.com
