Science Fiction for Real . . . Freaky Stuff!
Ever hear of the cordyceps fungi? For Christmas, one of our “family” gifts was the complete set of the BBC’s Planet Earth series. Seriously, folks, if you can, get this set (or if you’re on Netflix, order it). It’s amazing. The BEST nature series I’ve ever seen, hands down. It will give you a brand new appreciation and wonder of God’s creation.
Anyway, we were watching the jungle episode last night with the kids and it did a blip on this cordyceps fungi. This fungus invades the body of an insect through pores, infects its brain and organs, grows within it, eventually kills the host then bursts out of it like something from the Alien movie.
This reminded me of something James said in his little book in the Bible.
Each one is tempted when by his own evil desires, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
Sin is like that fungi, isn’t it? It gets inside us, takes up residence, and grows. Sometimes we don’t even realize what’s happening, other times we’re well aware of it and choose to ignore it or make excuses for it or somehow justify it. But it’s there, infecting us, taking over us, growing ever so slowly, and then, when it is fully matured, look out because it may just be the end of us. I look at those photos above and see that fungi protruding from those insects as sin and think, Man, I don’t want that to happen to me. Lord, keep me from evil.
