Hyalophora Who?

Hyalophora cecropia caterpillar

I found a hyalophora cecropia the other day. The biggest caterpillar I’ve ever seen. After some research I found out it will morph into the robin moth, the largest moth in North America. Makes sense. The caterpillar was at least 4 inches long and as thick as my thumb.

As weird as it sounds, I kept thinking about taking a bite of it. Hey, I’m sure somewhere in the world these crawlers are considered a delicacy.

Instead of getting a mouthful of green goo we let the spiny bugger go in the maple tree in our backyard. Hopefully it survives long enough to spin itself a satiny home for the winter.

  3. It almost looks like a spongy funky marshmallow–although I don’t know that I would intentionally eat it. 🙂

    • Haha! Heather, yes it does. I have no idea why I had this urge to eat it. Very strange. I think it had something to do with that scene in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Johnny Depp one) where Willie Wonka eats the caterpillar goo.

Pretty gross and cool at the same time! Lexi found a big tomatoe worm in mom and dad’s garden. It had wasp eggs all over it. Apparently the wasp eggs eat the tomatoe worm, and then the worm can’t eat the tomatoe plants. Yuck!!!!

  5. Alright, Mike, you’ve been spending too much time with creepy characters if you’re down to eating bugs! EWWWW!! If a thing that long and thick and green crawled my way, he would be mush….and not for eating!! EWWWWW!!
