Can Horror Touch Hearts?

I’m a guest columnist this week over at the Christian Fiction Online Magazine. Check out my article titled “Reaching Hearts Through Horror” and chime in with your thoughts. Can horror be used to touch hearts and challenge lives?

  1. Yes. It can open your eyes and hearts to the pain others are going through and empathize with them and help in whatever way you can.

  2. Great article Mike! You are right on in your assertion that ultimately it is the fear of death – the the struggle between life and death that is the most terrifying of all. We do face it every day – every time we get in the car…every time we shop in public…these days even going to the bank can be dangerous. Watch the hurricanes…even your home is not safe. Safe from what? Death.

I have attended two funerals this past week…one of a 45 year old mother of eight and one of a 65 year old. The mother of eight had lived her life devoted to the Lord, and the last words her family heard her utter in this world were, “The angels are here to get me.” The 65 year old did not repent and turn to the Lord until about eight hours before he left this earth, and while he died at peace and transformed by the redeeming power of Christ, he lived the last month of his life angry and surrounded by a fear that was palpable. (he was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma only four weeks before he died) Fear of death underscores our life in many ways – daily – and stories that explore that fear in the fictional realm can reach people who might not otherwise be brought to think about where they will spend eternity.

Sorry for the ramble. But death has touched my life twice within the week…and I’ve witnessed both sides of the fear.

That’s exactly my passion for writing, to get people to think about these issues and hopefully examine their own heart and soul. Thanks, Kim.
