Ditching the Victim Mentality

My wife and I are taking Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University class. It’s every Monday night for nine weeks. We’ve got three down, six to go. Very interesting stuff. Convicting stuff.

Thought-provoking stuff.

Victim (1961 film)

The big take-away for me last night was that how and where we spend our money is ultimately our choice. We like to play the victim, everybody does. Life happens to us and we stumble under its weight.

But the reality is that we make choices.

Later last night, Jen and I got on the topic of time and how there doesn’t seem to be enough time to do the things we really want to do. We’re always stuck doing things we have to do.

Then we both realized that how and where we spend our time is ultimately our choice.

We’re not victims and we need to stop acting like victims. We need to take control of both our finances and our schedule. We need to say yes to some things and no to other things. We need to be intentional.

I know you know you what I’m talking about. No doubt you’re there too.

Howsabout we make a pact, you and I? No more victims, okay? From now on we’re intentional. We make decisions and live with those decisions.

  1. Good thoughts Mike! We’re invited by so many channels to take on the victim mentality. But we have the privilege of self control. Besides, accepting the victim mentality dooms our successes to chance or luck.

  2. Wow! I really needed to read this today. I have some financial issues I am trying to resolve and it might be wise of me to research this Dave Ramsey class you mentioned. It so very true that we make our wn choices. I am no longer a victim, I will be intentional! Thank you Mike.
