The Darlington Society, Season II, Open Call for Membership

Last year I came up with the idea for The Darlington Society. I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with my writing and life in general and decided I needed some support group.

25 charter members were chosen and we spent nine months interacting, encouraging each other, praying, and supporting. They were my A-team and, looking back, so much happened that wouldn’t have if I didn’t have them in my corner. I was blessed and I hope they were too. Overall, I think it was a great success.

So I’d like to do it again. This time we’re looking for 30 members.

Interested? Here’s what you have to do:

One, read over the details of the Society again and please make sure this is something you want to commit to for five months. I’m excited about getting to know some of my readers better and working with them to reach more people with my books. If you’re a member, I’m betting you’ll count it a positive experience. We’ll be a blessing to each other.

Two, today, June 18, through Wednesday, June 20, post a comment on this blog or my other blog telling me in a few sentences why you want to be a part of the Society.

I’ll read over those posts, pray about them, and announce the 30 new members on Friday, June 22.

**Now, a disclaimer is necessary. I have readers overseas who I know will want to be a part of this. That’s okay. We’re not going to exclude anyone just because they live in a different country. That would hardly be fair. BUT, please understand we can’t send hard copies of ARCs/manuscripts overseas, the postage is just too much. If you live outside the US you will recieve the early reader’s copy of my next book via email as an electronic edition.

Lastly, please help spread the word about this unique opportunity by sharing this post on Facebook and Twitter and maybe even your own blog.

I’m looking forward to reading all your comments and embarking on a new journey with you.

Please note: This term of The Darlington Society is for my first book under my new pen name, Michael King. The novel is NOT suspense but drama. Titled, A Thousand Sleepless Nights.

Questions? Please leave it as a comment and I’ll do my best to answer them.

“Co-Author a Short Story With Me” Contest!

I’m going to court.

Yes, it’s true. If you read in the paper that Mike Dellosso was charged with 3 counts of DUI don’t believe a word of it. Because it’s not true.

Wednesday I received a letter stating that I was to appear in court. The charges ranged from DUI to running a stop sign to driving with a revoked license and expired registration to having “improper” tires on my car.

Of course, it’s not true. I would never put improper tires on my car.

I went to the courthouse to sort the whole mess out and, well, it seems I have to appear in court.

Now, here’s what I want to do with this. How would you like to co-write a short story with me to be self-published as an e-book? Sound like fun? I think so.

Here’s what you have to do: In 10 sentences or less, describe how you see this story unfolding. Now by sentences I mean normal sentences, not some of those Biblical run-on mammoths. I’m giving you through next week and on Friday the 11th I’ll announce the big winner, the story that intrigues me the most. And you can enter as many different ideas as you like.

How to enter: Post “I’m in” as a comment to this post then send your idea to michael_dellosso (at) yahoo.com. Just substitute @ for (at) . . . need to ward off spam and hackers.

I will then work with the winner to develop a full short story we will write and e-publish together.

Are you in?

Oh yeah, on the 11th I’ll also tell you the truth behind this whole court appearance thing.

Different Names, Different Roles

If you subscribe to this blog via email will you please consider subscribing to my other blog, Michael King’s blog, as well?

One of the things I’m doing to manage my time more wisely is focusing my blogging in different ways for each blog.

This blog, Mike Dellosso’s, will focus primarily on all things writing–my own writing, how I do it, what’s happening now and in the future; the writing of my fellow authors, interviews, giveaways; and the publishing process and world–and my other blog, Michael King’s, will focus mostly on issues of faith and family and every day living. I’d be honored if you’d follow both blogs.

And if you’re reading this and don’t subscribe to either, please consider doing so. And I’d love to hear from you if you do. Drop by, leave a comment.

A Time for Change . . . and a New Direction

English: Fork in Road The fork to the right le...

Fork in the road

There comes a time in everyone’s life when you have to try something new. I’m not afraid of trying, not afraid of failing. I am afraid of regrets.

Go back with me to 2009, I’ve just finished a year-long battle with colon cancer and am having a horrible time getting back into writing. I’ve lost my inspiration, my will, my drive. Cancer has sucked every ounce of fight out of me and has drained me emotionally. Over the next few months things begin to normalize, I start writing again, begin to feel like I’m regaining my creative momentum. Only something is different. I see life in a new light now, view things differently. I still love writing suspense but seem to want more. I want to touch readers on a different level, more personal, more where they are as they live life and struggle through it as I have.

It took me awhile to figure out exactly what was going on inside me but when I did I ran it past my agent and publisher and they both agreed. I needed to branch out and write something that wasn’t suspense, something that was more aimed at the heart, something that dealt with life and love, heartache and triumph. Something that could and would reach a wider audience.

So . . . I began work on my first contemporary drama, A Thousand Sleepless Nights. But there was a problem. Mike Dellosso writes suspense. Readers know that and expect that. And we didn’t want to confuse the market by throwing something totally different at them. So I assumed a pen name–Michael King.

From this point forward I will be two writers: Mike Dellosso who writes suspense, and Michael King who writes contemporary drama. How will I handle all of this? Great question.

I will eventually transition the bulk of Mike Dellosso’s writing and interaction to my Facebook author page. There I will handle all updates, giveaways, thoughts, etc. I’ll still blog right here but primarily to notify you of updates on the Facebook page.

Michael King has a blog and a Facebook page as well but most of his writing and interaction will take place on the blog.

Here’s what I’m asking of you:

  1. If you haven’t yet, go to Mike Dellosso’s Facebook page and “like” it. It’s the primary way you’ll receive updates when I post there. And visit often. I’ll continue to give away books and update everyone on my next suspense novel, The Prodigy.
  2. Visit Michael King’s blog and fill in your email address to follow via email. Peruse the site, check out the “About” page. There I will be blogging regularly (hopefully) about faith and family, life and love, heartache and triumph.
  3. “Like” Michael King’s Facebook page. You can do this by going to the page or from the blog (in the right sidebar).
  4. Please share this with your friends.

I know this is different. It’s risky. It’s bold. But it’s where my heart is taking me and where I believe God is leading me. Join me on the journey and let’s see where this crazy road will take us.

To celebrate this new direction, I’m giving away three SIX copies of Frantic to those who visit Michael King’s blog and leave a comment. Winners will announced Friday.

7 Hours Project . . . coming in 2012!

BIG announcement time . . .

A few months ago James Wilson approached me about joining him and five other authors in a little project he called 7 Hours. I loved the concept and agreed.  A proposal was developed and Tyndale House Publishers showed interest.

Well, the contracts are signed and 7 Hours will soon become a reality.

7 Hours is a series of seven novellas by seven authors exploring life, death, and time as we know it.

It’s mind-bending; it’s unique; it’s trail-blazing. Nothing like this has been done before.

It’s BIG.

Check out the special landing page for the 7 Hours project and “like” our official Facebook page to keep up with developments in real time.

Oh yeah, the other authors involved are:

Rene Gutteridge
Ronie Kendig
Robin Parrish
Tom Pawlik
Travis Thrasher
James Andrew Wilson

I’m honored and thrilled to be working with these excellent authors.

Help us spread the word!

Mike Dellosso’s Writing World Daily Newspaper

Daily newspaper Norrköpings Tidningar in 1918

Image via Wikipedia

So I decided to try something new here. The other day I came across this site paper.li where you can publish your own online daily newspaper and get to play the role of publisher. You choose sections for the paper, keywords for articles, and filters, and the site searches the web for appropriate articles and plugs in fresh content daily. It’s pretty neat. I can even browse the web and “capture” articles I’d like to put in a future edition of the paper.

Check out my daily newspaper, Mike Dellosso’s Writing World, for all things related to writing, publishing, fiction, and marketing. Take a moment to scan the headlines. I’ve already found several very helpful articles for my own writing. If you like it, subscribe to it to receive a daily notification email that it’s ready to be viewed.

I’m still figuring it out and toying with it. There’s a lot  you can do to really hone in on what topic you wish to spotlight and a lot of it I still don’t understand. I’ve been trying to run through it every morning and edit the content because occassionally a bummer article will slip in. So if you see something that looks like it doesn’t belong, I aplogize.

A New Presence and New Giveaway

We have a new presence on Facebook!

As we ramp up for the May 3 release of Darkness Follows we’ve developed a new fan page on Facebook. This will be the place to go for breaking news, updates on new books, contests, giveaways, links, discussions, polls, you name it. I’ll continue to post from my regular Facebook page but this new page will be where I do most of my hanging out for all things related to my books and writing.

You can do me a huge favor by showing your support and going to the page and “Liking” it. ALSO, if you do so any time during the month of April you’ll be entered into a drawing to win a copy of Darkness Follows (I’m giving away 5 copies) and a fantastic grand prize to be detailed later.

Hope to see you there!
